Day 1:
Topic 7 & 8:
The structure of DNA is ideally suited to its function. Information stored as a code in DNA is copied onto mRNA. The information transferred from DNA to mRNA is translated into an amino acid sequence. How metabolic reactions are regulated in response to the cell’s needs? How inhibitors can reduce the rate of reaction and what is end product inhibition? Energy is converted to a usable form in cell respiration. Cell respiration involves the oxidation and reduction of compounds.
Day 2:
Topic 8 & 9:
Light energy is converted into chemical energy. light-dependent reactions. Light-independent reactions take place in the stroma. Absorption of light by photosystems generates excited electrons. Photolysis of water generates electrons for use in light-dependent reactions. Transfer of excited electrons occurs between carriers in thylakoid membranes. Transpiration is the inevitable consequence of gas exchange in the leaf. Plants transport water from the roots to the leaves to replace losses from transpiration. Undifferentiated cells in the meristems of plants allow indeterminate growth. Flowering involves a change in gene expression in the shoot apex.
Day 3:
Topic 9, 10 & 11:
The switch to flowering is a response to the length of light and dark periods in many plants. Chromosomes replicate in interphase before meiosis. Crossing over is the exchange of DNA material between non-sister homologous chromatids. Unlinked genes segregate independently as a result of meiosis. Gene loci are said to be linked if on the same chromosome. Evolution requires that allele frequencies change with time in populations. Immunity is based on recognition of self and destruction of foreign material. The roles of the musculoskeletal system are movement, support, and protection. All animals excrete nitrogenous waste products, and some animals also balance water and solute concentrations. Sexual reproduction involves the development and fusion of haploid gametes.
