What is your teaching philosophy?
Teaching is to identify learners’ learning styles and help them be happy and consistent with the learning process.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In typical first learning, I will do the following:
- Create a friendly learning atmosphere for a student for him/her to be confident, independent, inquirer, and above all, enjoy learning.
- Help students to understand the need for the subject matter in real-life situations.
- Find out what level of knowledge students bring from previous experience through diagnostic analysis to identify students’ strengths and weaknesses.
- Adapt to the level of thinking and analysis to bring out the best in him/her.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
To help a student become an independent learner, I will do the following;
- Instill the habit of inquiry through guidance on how to find specific information from all reliable sources.
- Encourage students to research by challenging him/her with applications of the subject matter in real-life situations.
- Give the student graduated problems according to his/her level of knowledge and understanding.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
To help a student stay motivated, I must stay motivated to prove that I enjoy what I am doing. I will do the following to help a student stay motivated:
- Give him/her a series of open-end questions ( formative assessments) to inquire and find solutions to such problems. These problems would be focused on the students expressing his/her own ideas rather than from me.
- Give prompt and constructive feedback to student work.
- Challenge students to do more.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
First of all, I would have to find out the root cause of the situation. Probably it might be due to a lack of previous knowledge after I address the problem according to my diagnostic.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I normally give them content from videos where subtitles are shown. Students will use these to improve.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
- Problem-set with prompt feedback.
- Allowing students to take control of their learning rather than “imposing” my methods on them.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling with?
Question-bank with different levels of difficulty works for me. In this case, I create a bank of questions with different levels of difficulty. Students get to choose his/her own question according to his/her level. Timely and constructive feedbacks are essential for the success of this method, though.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
This normally depends on the learning style of the student. Discovery of the students’ learning style is key to ensuring that they understand the material being covered in the lesson. For example, some learners would prefer you rather give them minimum information, and they will find the rest. Others would want you to give them each detail of the process. Reflections at the end of the lesson are critical to the success of these strategies.
How do you build a student’s confidence in a subject?
Challenge students with a series of formative tasks and give timely feedback.
How do you evaluate a student’s needs?
Mainly through diagnostic assessments.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student’s needs?
This is done through reflections before, during, and after every lesson. Students get to evaluate what they understood well, what can be improved, and what they did not understand. This gives an insight into the pace to go in the learning process.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
- Work-sheets
- Power-points slides.
- Graphical tools (Geogebra, R, TI-Calculator, Desmos)
