Politics and Government
I like to approach my lessons dynamically. For me, it is essential to approach any subject from different methods and study materials. I do not believe in hand-holding but see myself more as a facilitator of one's learning. The idea is to guide my students to think in a particular direction, not do the thinking for them.
For a first lesson, I would have an honest conversation trying to understand your goals and what you envision achieving with our lessons. Then, we would plan how to achieve these goals and expectations best. Then the next thing to consider is whether the teaching style works for the student and consider any feedback on the adjustments that need to be made in terms of pace or content.
The IB allows for plenty of opportunities for a student to become an independent learner. The main thing for me as a tutor is to ensure that I give enough tools for my students to think; my role is that of a facilitator, not someone who spoon-feeds the course content.
The best way to keep a student motivated is to ensure that they are not bored or feeling helpless. The first is done by keeping the lessons dynamic while the second is to by ensuring that the student feels supported at all times and can come to me with any questions.
If something seems complicated to a student, it is best to break it down into bite-sized concepts and ideas to make it less intimidating. I might also employ different resources (such as videos or case studies) to make a concept more apparent. Lastly, be ready to answer the same question 100 times if need be. Patience is key!
You must slow down the pace and try and understand where the problem stems from. Is the vocabulary, or is the text too boring? Once you find the root of the problem, you can work on it :)
I set proper expectations and a plan to fulfill these expectations, Using as many different resources as possible. Listen to the student, and see how comfortable they are with everything.
When a student struggles with something, it can lead to them running away or hating that subject completely. The way to keep them engaged is to prove to them that this is something they can be good at with a bit of grit and determination. Once the student sees the results, they will autonatically be excited and engaged in a subject.
Going through the material in depth using different resources and lots of exam preparation
By working on areas that they are struggling with :) Once you take the fear out of the subject, a student is automatically confident
By talking to them and understanding where their struggles are.
Constant feedback, especially after the first lesson, is vital. I must ask my students whether they understood everything, if the pace was something they could follow or if something needed to be altered. Constructive feedback is the only way we can work together constructively!
