Guiding students to achieve their best. Bringing out the artist they have inside.
In my first session, I usually need to understand the student's status. That means, where is he/she actually in the subject (art journal progress, artworks, comparative study). I love to see their works and to understand their subject situation. Once I know how's everything we start planning the next steps.
Being an independent learner is easy if you start with easy prompts, keeping the sketchbook updated, and moving step-by-step into more requirements. I like to suggest artists and art webs which can make them move more into the art. At the same time work a reflective prompt in their sketchbook, build a space of reflection. That's something which helps them be independent.
Giving positive but clear feedback helps students to keep the motor on. Besides, I work a lot with final artworks and curatorial practice. The final submissions help students to understand what they're asked and the requirements. If the student knows where is she/he going, that's going to help during the path. Besides, starting with small goals make the student feel there's a development in his/her work.
Understand exactly where is he/she stuck. Find alternatives to teach the concept or skill.
Reading comprehension requires time and it's very positive to start with step-by-step tasks. Firstly, giving short prompts that the student will have to solve and finding texts which can help. I usually work with subject-specific language lists and easy visual cards so that students find easy writing and reading comprehension when searching.
Creative prompts to start working skills, creativity, techniques. Investigation on the student's tastes in art. It's necessary for the student to work on something he/she loves and move into it. If the student likes what he/she does, the artwork will be successful.
I like to show other students' work and the stories behind it. I had students who have struggled with Visual Arts but have ended up with amazing projects. Patience, effort, positive attitude was essential to achieve all the requirements. Finding out something which motivates them and working on it.
Checking and reading the art journal gives a lot of information about how's the student moving in the subject. I usually ask for the sketchbook and check the development of the artwork. It gives me a lot of information and helps to guide me towards the next step.
Positive feedback. Clear explanations. Those are the main points. Besides, I have every month personal interviews in which the student talks about his/her art project, we check the art journal and the artwork created as a whole. Students love to see their artwork together, it makes them feel there's a lot of work done and helps them to continue the journey.
Their work is essential to know their needs. I like to understand their work, their status, their attitude towards the subject. Those points give information on where's the student and what is he/she going to need to achieve the requirements.
Firstly, is very important to know about the student. Once I know how's she/he working, what's the status of the artwork, I start planning with him/her next steps always focused on the final submissions and the requirements.
During my tutoring session, I use ppts when describing the prompts and documents with the requirements in each case. When working on skills and techniques, I usually show how to apply them and prepare exercises related to the student's visual arts project and the artists he/she is doing the research to connect their work to their CS.
