Tutoring should first be about the understanding of the two parties and a transfer of knowledge that benefits both parties greatly. My goal is for them to understand the material that will help with grades and later success in life.
Firstly, I would try to get to know my student and understand why they seek tutoring. I would also like to know their strengths and weaknesses so that I know how to help them. Then I would also ask how they think I can help them and what they need help with.
To help students become independent thinkers, I would first give them tips on creating a study routine. A good study routine is essential in handling the IB workload. I would also tell them about my experience as a student in the IB and give them the tips given to me.
Motivation is crucial in accomplishing anything. to give a student motivation, I would start over, especially with parts already assimilated. In doing so, the student will gain confidence and want
I would first identify which part of the concept he doesn't understand and try solving it from there. If that doesn't work, I would go back to the concept's bases and explain it in other, more straightforward terms.
I would try to explain the idea in different and simpler words, and if the student doesn't understand, I would try with a diagram.
I first determine their position in the curriculum and establish what type of learners they are.
I would try to relate the subject to their areas of passion or interest. In doing so, I may also use simulators such as Phet.
To ensure that a student understood the material, I occasionally randomly quiz them on recently-learned material. If the quiz is failed, I would go back to the subject and make sure they understand.
Firstly I would use positive encouragement, and even when they feel they are struggling, I keep supporting and ensuring they don't get too down on themselves. I also try to use straightforward questions, which I am sure they have the answer to boost their confidence.
I use the first session to ask questions and determine their level in the specific subjects to make a program fit for them.
During a typical tutoring session, I use my computer, the internet for various websites such as simulators or past exam questions, and the whiteboard.
