I believe that all students are capable of doing well as long as they have capable teachers.
Introduce myself, tell them a bit about my relevant background, find out what the student hopes to get out of our session(s), and once we establish students' goals, we can make a plan with the student on how to reach them.
I can provide them with foundational research skills, and time management skills and help them access information that they can study on their own.
Gentle encouragement, informal assessment, and follow-up are needed to keep students motivated.
Once a skill or concept is identified as something the student struggles with, in particular, we can develop strategies based on individual student needs.
There are many proven strategies for thinking and reading. As a librarian, I am a reading specialist and we can come up with some effective exercises based on individual student needs.
Reviewing problem areas and installing specific strategies works well.
Depending on the individual student, once we attach learning to SMART goals, I have found that students become invested in what they are doing.

In my initial meeting, we seek to find out why students have sought out a tutor. This usually tells us a lot about what student needs are and then later, through interactions with students and informal assessment we can see which areas to focus on more.
