Tutor Teaching Style
Teaching is finding the best way to teach our students how to master skills.
Teaching has a fundamental human factor, so knowing our students is critical. In a first session with a student, I consider it essential to know his/her needs to understand the area of improvement that must be developed to satisfy the student's expectations entirely.
Teaching the skills is how the students will learn how to solve problems independently. Teaching the tips for the exams or the critical aspects of a component is fundamental to developing independent learners.
Motivation is essential, and listening to the student's needs is one vital aspect of reason. Another important element is to apply various methods to teach the students.
Not all students learn simultaneously, which all teachers must deal with daily in every classroom. Finding different ways to teach all students is fundamental to being effective.
If a student is finding difficulty in reading comprehension, I would suggest different methods: helping them to identify if there is a language difficulty; supporting the student by “breaking” the text into smaller parts; finding alternative texts that explain the same topic but from a different perspective; among other strategies.
I consider it is essential to create a friendly and professional environment where students can express themselves and feel comfortable and supported by the teacher. On the hand, students must trust the teacher’s knowledge of the subject.
Students must find purpose when they study, and these can be from a great range of options: entering a great university, playing soccer to enter a university, getting a good grade; getting a scholarship; etc. Understanding the goals is a crucial aspect of motivating a student.
To verify if the student understood, as a teacher, you can apply different methods: exit tickets, a brief Kahoot, an oral revision, and ask the student to explain one aspect of the topic seen with his/her own words.
To build the student’s confidence in a subject, it is essential to teach the skills the student will need to master to solve the exam. It is not only a matter of content; it is vital to prepare the ability to perform in the subject.
To evaluate the student’s needs it is necessary to know in advance the topic that must be covered in the lesson and to see what aspects of the subject the student is facing difficulties with.
I think the dynamics are customized in a tutor lesson depending on the student’s needs and expectations.
Depending on the subject, the materials differ. Videos, map minds, charts, maps, Google documents, and presentations, among others, are the most used resources.
