Planned the curriculum for the English Language.
BA in English With Business
A teacher's primary role is to utilize available resources to create meaningful learning experiences for the students.
I would attempt to establish: student-tutor rapport, student needs, and students' motivations for joining the session
I could simplify the task into manageable parts, provide scaffolding whenever possible and recognize and praise progress, regardless of how little.
I could attempt to establish rapport, provide variety in teaching methods and identify and help overcome challenges and constraints.
Evaluate the significance or importance of mastering it (i.e., if it is a core concept or essential skill, mastering it would be more of a priority compared to a 'good-to-have' skill), attempt to determine the source of difficulty, break the skill down into more manageable sub-skills / parts of a concept and keep the student (and myself :) motivated.
Use top-down (text-type conventions/ context/ conceptual understanding of purpose, intended audience, language variety & bottom-up (word use, sentence, and vocabulary meaning) processing methods to understand the text. Once the text is understood, understanding the requirement of the question, question types, and answering strategies).
In a 1-to -1 tutoring setting, I found that cooperative learning strategies help students to collaborate with tutors and make more significant progress compared to a tutor-directed approach.
Use what he can do as a point of reference and motivation.
Online resources like Flipped classroom style using relevant YouTube video clips to help understand context, onkime quizzes (quizzes IB-style questions), identifying the main idea at the paragraph level, and identifying transition markers & text conventions
I could encourage a growth mindset by providing feedback that acknowledges effort and, at the same time, encourage sustained effort.
I would access the information from Student himself, the parent/ guardian, and my observations.
I would be mindful to keep the lesson speed and the difficulty level of the test flexible and adjustable so.as.to.prepare.
Online resources (e.g., pallet), IB textbook, tutor-created slides, various text- and workbooks.
