I’m Nicole, an English HL/SL tutor. I am a graduate of the International Diploma Baccalaureate Programme (IBDP) and have a lot of insight into how the program works. Even before I graduated from my IBDP, I was an avid reader and have always loved literature. My passion for the same shines through in my tutoring sessions. Apart from being an English tutor, I am a Graphic Designer.

Teaching Experience

I volunteered to teach English to kids in primary school and middle school in India. Apart from being an English tutor, I am a Graphic Designer, and I have worked and collaborated with hundreds of different clients. My work involves a lot of time management and organization, collaboration, and understanding. I bring all of these skills to use as a tutor.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is simple: Listen, understand, and collaborate. This applies to me as well as my students. When we listen and try to understand each other, we are in sync to collaborate and tackle any hurdles that the student might face regarding their learning.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session, I will try my best to get to know my student and understand their concerns about their learning. I will then mention how I think these concerns could be addressed and solved. I always like to have a plan, but I also know that plans don’t always work. This is why I am very adaptable to trying different learning methods to work out what works best for them. I will also inquire about what books are being read in class and how they think they will benefit from my guidance. This will be my basis for planning a learning strategy for them and a teaching strategy for myself to receive optimal results.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I always think that actually understanding the material is one step closer to becoming an independent learner. Often, students have preconceived notions of how things are too difficult before they even try to read and understand them. I try to help them overcome this thinking to help them become independent learners.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I will alter and organize my sessions to keep a student interested in the material being taught. For example, if it’s a book that they have read for class, I will ask about the parts that they found interesting and go from there. Establishing some interest in a part of the book that the student liked creates motivation to learn more.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will get down to the basics and make them understand those first. Often, this is the main problem that students face when trying to understand a concept.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

My approach is to have a spoken conversation to gauge their vocabulary and understanding of the language to help students struggling with reading comprehension. Once this has been established, I will formulate a plan for them to expand their vocabulary. I will also ask them questions about the text because this will help them understand the text better.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

The most successful strategy begins with listening to and understanding the student and their difficulties. I then tailor a plan to tackle the mentioned difficulties in the best possible way.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling with?

There is always something of interest in English literature, be it a character or a theme. I focus on finding relatable traits in characters that the student might admire. Even liking one character in a book can go a long way when it comes to getting engaged in it. It also sometimes makes it easier to talk about whether the book/play was adapted into a movie. This helps students visualize the book more easily and gets them excited about it.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

My go-to approach is to talk it out. Communication is key when it comes to learning anything. Even if students cannot clearly identify why they don’t understand something, I can understand what they need by asking them the right questions and evaluating their answers.

How do you build a student’s confidence in a subject?

Lack of confidence usually stems from a lack of understanding of the material. I believe that a thorough understanding of the student’s reading material and different concepts build up confidence, so I focus on helping them.

How do you evaluate a student’s needs?

While listening to them talk about their difficulties, I note everything and draw up corresponding methods to assist each need.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student’s needs?

I empathize with the students’ needs and adapt accordingly. Some students learn more through conversation; some are more visual learners, etc. All of these approaches have benefits to aid in the student’s learning. I am very well suited to accommodating these learning methods.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I will typically use my notes written in a Word document or PDF and sometimes a PowerPoint Presentation.
