Bio

I was good at studying since elementary school, and as a task of the monitor in class, I also had tasks to improve my classmates’ study. Therefore, gradually I have been so experienced in tutoring students to master the knowledge I delivered to them.

That is why I am so happy with the job as a teacher.

What is your teaching philosophy?

It is essential to know where to start and how to start for any specific student.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

(Before class, the current status of a student should be obtained, which includes: in which level of teaching materials, how good is the understanding capability from the student, etc.)
1. First of all, introduce what I will teach in this class;
2. Review any materials which will be needed for this class;
3. Some practice questions will be provided to the student to see if they could understand. If not, I should spend some time to help get through with them;
4. Start teaching today’s content with the concept with clear explanations;
5. Go through with examples;
6. Provide relevant questions for the student to practice;
7. Correct them if something wrong with them;
8. If having time, go this cycle for another concept;
9. Before finishing the class, summarize the teaching content, and focus on those key points in this class;
10. Assign homework (and will be marked and explained in the next class).

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Only teach the content in textbooks and explain how to do homework is not enough for a student to be an independent learner. The most important thing is to teach him or her methods of studying. Two easy tasks for a student to get a ramp for difficult questions are: straightforwardly teach things, so he gains the confidence to go on; always make a summary for difficult teaching content and repeat them. If a student has enough confidence in studying, and we pass over him some methods, he will try to walk and run himself…

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Help him gain confidence, always encourage him, and praise him if he got even a bit of improvement. And gradually add some difficult degree in his assignment to climb on the top of the mountain.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Make that skill or concept very easy for him to accept by using some ways to understand easily.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

The full understanding of questions is fundamental; I would focus first on those Math terms, which are the major obstacle for weak students to tackle Math assignments easily: students much know those Math terms first. English grammar and general knowledge will be explained if possible.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Easily explain teaching materials;
Always encourage student and praise him or her if even a bit of improvement is seen;
Always summarize and focus on key points, and repeat them;
Request students to memorize those Math terms to be used before they are taught.
Explain any issues in homework students could not understand.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject they are struggling in?’

Provide easy teaching would make students feel not that tough for learning this part of Math, and combine some interesting stories will also make students have some interest in what they are learning.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Provide students with questions to practice to check the correct rate of an assignment. To be successful in the official examination, they always provide them with questions that appeared in past official IB examinations.

How do you build a student’s confidence in a subject?

From the very beginning, provide easy concept-explanation and easy questions, and gradually a bit more difficult ones. So they will be told that they can solve almost all the questions for the examination.

How do you evaluate a student’s needs?

If they don’t understand what I teach, if they can not solve the questions I assign or somewhere are not correct, I must tackle those issues because those are their very needs. If I don’t, they will fail in the official IB examination, and I will fail to trust students.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student’s needs?

Solve students’ problems daily to make students go through the homework

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Usually, I will use a typical textbook or change it to be PPT if it is not easy to understand.
