Day 1:

Measurement and data processing + Stoichiometric Relationships: Understand the fundamentals of what matter is made of, carry out stoichiometric calculations, and show chemical conversions by effectively balancing chemical equations and using spectroscopic identification to analyze organic compounds.

  • Spectroscopic Identification
  • Introduction to the particulate nature of matter and chemical change
  • The mole concept
  • Reacting masses and volumes

Atomic Structure + Periodicity: This unit explores the structure and behavior of the smallest units of matter, and the trends and properties of s, p, and d block elements. These topics are imperative in understanding later units as they will teach you the basis of interactions between matter.

  • The nuclear atom
  • Electron configuration
  • Periodic table
  • Periodic trends
  • Electrons in atoms
  • First-row d-block elements
  • Colored complexes

Chemical Bonding and Structure: Understand the different types of intramolecular bonds and intermolecular forces that give rise to different compounds and their properties.

  • Ionic bonding and structure
  • Covalent bonding
  • Covalent structures
  • Intermolecular forces
  • Metallic bonding
  • Further aspects of covalent bonding and structure
  • Hybridization

Day 2:

Energetics + Kinetics +Equilibrium: These units provide insight on what makes reactions go and their rates. You will understand and learn how to calculate variables, such as enthalpy, entropy, free energy, to find out which chemical reactions will be more favorable and how we can manipulate factors to make reactions in equilibrium go faster.

  • Measuring energy changes
  • Hess's Law
  • Bond enthalpies
  • Collision theory and rates of reaction
  • Equilibrium
  • Energy cycles
  • Entropy and spontaneity
  • Activation energy
  • Rate expression and reaction mechanism
  • The equilibrium law

Acids and Bases: Understand what makes an acid or base, how we measure acidity or basicity using the pH scale and acid-base reactions.

  • Theories of acids and bases
  • Properties of acids and bases
  • The pH scale
  • Strong and weak acids and bases
  • Acid deposition
