As a Language and Literature teacher, I draw examples, analogies, and metaphors from the day to day life to help students make connections with the text and the characters. I keep the themes in the picture and help students identify the purpose, the intended audience, structure, form, etc while reading and discussing. I keep my questions open-ended and provide opportunities for to students to put forth their opinions as well as ask questions.
The first session would ideally be discretely getting to know the student's strengths and challenges in the subject while talking about their interests and gauging the type of help they would need. Ideally, also inquiring about the texts chosen by their school, going through the requirement of the subject criteria wise along with the ideas for IO's and EE (if opted in English)
I generally elicit responses from the students rather than giving out answers. I help them find connections and encourage them to identify the themes and Global Issues independently. I scaffold the challenging tasks and assess the strengths and challenges, focusing on the latter. Giving timely feedback and checking the students' work as per the criteria helps me keep track of the progress I share with the students so that they feel motivated and responsible for their learning.
I appreciate the effort put in by the student and then touch upon the areas that need more work. I give them timely feedback so they can edit and enhance the quality of their response.
I generally use storytelling techniques to let a concept sink in, along with the use of various references, analogies, and metaphors. I use local folktales as well as current affairs to conclude. I use scaffolding and step-by-step guidance to build up the skills, be it reading, writing, or speaking.
I break up the reading comprehension questions into factual, conceptual, and inferential (in that order) and then break up the passage into paragraphs. Strategies also depend on the type of difficulty and the level of difficulty.
Identifying the type of learner that a student is, really helps in deciding the way forward. Breaking down a long task into smaller chunks/ building blocks helps the students remain motivated and give their best. Acknowledging their interest, opinion, and their challenges boosts their confidence.
Language and Literature as a subject give myriad opportunities to pique the interest of varied learners. The common existence of the elements of the subject makes it easier to find a connection and that acts as the starting point.
Summarizing, annotating, quick quizzes, creating rubrics, assessments, and many such techniques will help me gauge the students' understanding.
I give timely feedback and appreciate the effort. I generally focus on the requirement of the task criteria-wise and encourage the students to aim for the higher band, giving them tips and tricks for the same, thus building their confidence.
A gauge of the needs in the introductory session as well as thorough assessments and discussion.
Depending on the type of learner that a student is, what their needs are, and the areas of concern, I adapt my tutoring to focus n those needs. There is no 'one size fits all approach, except for encouragement and appreciation.
I use presentations, video clips, annotations, graphs, mind maps, and content material in the sessions.
