I believe every child has the right to learn and get the best out of what is needed to help support a learner. Teachers should be able to provide access to information and resources to support a learner, provide differentiated activities and pedagogy to learn as well as act as a mentor to facilitate the learning.
In a typical first session, I would like to introduce myself and relate how I work to what I will be doing in the upcoming sessions. I would then like to give some space/questions to my student to talk and ask any questions they would like to know more about.
To help a student become an independent learner, Ensure that the student has the necessary information/ knowledge needed to work on their own. Provide a checklist for the student to know what and how to work. This can be a reference for the student to track their progress. Provide a "Big Questions" set that students can answer/ work on as they progress. Set up follow-up meetings to ensure that the student is doing well.
To help my student stay motivated, I need to set clear and achievable goals (even if they are short ones). Encourage them along the way. I should celebrate their success/achievements as they progress.
Suppose a student has difficulty in learning a skill or a concept. In that case, I will differentiate my strategies and activities/worksheets and any online resources I am using to help facilitate the information needed.
To help students struggling with reading comprehension, I should ensure that they have the appropriate level that suits them. Then, I would make a student read along with me to identify the weakness and accordingly use a reading strategy right for that student to allow them to read. **Example of reading methods I have used would be: ** Using Prior Knowledge/Previewing and predicting, Identifying the Main Idea and Summarization, Questioning, Making Inferences, and visualizing.
Some strategies that have been successful in starting with students would be inquiry and conceptual-based teaching and learning.
A teacher should rely on varied strategies and aids to help engage students in a subject they do not like. Such examples would be; using auditory aids when teaching, depending on visual aids, such as pictures, videos, etc.
Some techniques to ensure that a student understands the material would be; past papers (if it is IB-based), formative assessments, summative assessments, presentations, checking note-taking, and summarizing.
Students should constantly be reminded of their big goals and the reward they will achieve once they get what they have worked hard for. A teacher should always be the student's support system, listen carefully to their concerns, and provide constructive feedback and support as needed.
Evaluate a student's need; provide a short standardized assessment at the beginning of the session.
I need to ensure that my teaching strategies and tools are what the student needs to reach the level of understanding required. I will always ensure that the resources and tools used are level-appropriate.
I use references to books and educational materials, examination materials, pallets,s and online resources for enhanced practice.
Farah's work with Simon is excellent! I will definitely approach her again. :)
