SSST Tutoring FAQs
Common questions about our IB self-taught tutoring service
We offer tutoring in 55+ languages including Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Korean, Japanese, Hindi, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Turkish, Italian, Dutch, Hebrew, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Polish, Thai, Vietnamese, Bengali, Urdu, Persian, and many more. If your language isn't listed, contact us and we'll find a qualified tutor for you.
Absolutely. Work selection is one of the most important decisions in the SSST programme. Your tutor will guide you through the IB Prescribed Reading List, helping you choose 7 works with the right balance of gender, time period, place, and literary form. They'll ensure at least 4 works are in your language of study and at least 3 are in translation, as required by the IB.
Your tutor will guide you through every stage of IO preparation: selecting a global issue, choosing your two texts (one in your SSST language and one in translation), building your analysis, and practising delivery. You'll do multiple mock IOs via video call with detailed feedback against the IB rubric, so you know exactly what examiners expect.
Yes. Our tutors are bilingual and can communicate with your school's IB coordinator in English while supporting you in your mother tongue. They can help translate requirements, explain assessment criteria, and ensure your coordinator has what they need to support your SSST candidacy.
You can start at any point. Many students come to us in Year 2 when they realise they need more support. Your tutor will assess where you are, identify gaps, and create a targeted plan. That said, starting early in Year 1 gives you the most time to build strong literary analysis skills and select the right works.
Most SSST students benefit from 1-2 sessions per week. In Year 1, weekly sessions help build analytical skills and work through your reading list. In Year 2, especially approaching exams and the IO, students often increase to twice weekly. Your tutor will recommend a schedule based on your needs and timeline.
Yes. Many of our SSST tutors are active or former IB examiners. They are up to date with the latest syllabus changes, including the reduction from 9 to 7 required works and the current Paper 1, Paper 2, and Individual Oral assessment criteria. They know exactly what earns marks.
This is more common than you think and it's not too late. Your tutor will prioritise: focus on the works you've already read, ensure you're prepared for the IO (30% of your grade), and build targeted Paper 1 and Paper 2 skills. Many of our students have gone from struggling to scoring 6s and 7s with focused, late-stage support.
