The AP Psychology FRQ section has two questions: an Article Analysis Question (AAQ) built on one summarized research study, and an Evidence-Based Question (EBQ) built on three. Each is worth up to 7 points, and together they make up 33% of your exam score in 70 minutes. Both reward the same habit: tie every answer to something specific in the source, then explain it with psychology. (This guide has been updated for the 2026-27 academic year.)

Key Takeaways

The AP Psychology free-response section is 2 questions in 70 minutes, worth 33% of the score, and it is taken digitally in the Bluebook app.
The Article Analysis Question has six parts worth 7 points: research method, variable, statistic, ethics, generalizability and a 2-point argument.
The Evidence-Based Question asks for a claim, two cited pieces of evidence from two different sources, and reasoning that applies two different course concepts.
Definitions alone never earn points; every answer has to be applied to the study or sources in front of you.
In 2025, naming the research method and interpreting a statistic were the lowest-scoring AAQ parts, and applying a second, different concept was the weakest EBQ part, so practice those first.

How the AP Psychology FRQ Section Works

AP Psychology was revised for the 2024-25 school year, and the old free-response format was replaced by two new question types that debuted on the May 2025 exam. The exam is now fully digital: you answer both multiple-choice and free-response questions in College Board's Bluebook app, and your responses are submitted automatically when time runs out. For the 2026-27 academic year, the exam is scheduled for Friday, May 14, 2027.

The full exam takes 2 hours 40 minutes. Section I is 75 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes, worth about two-thirds of your score. Section II is the free-response section:

Question	Built on	Parts	Points	College Board's guidance on time
Question 1, Article Analysis Question (AAQ)	One summarized, peer-reviewed study	Six	Up to 7	About 25 minutes, including 10 minutes of reading
Question 2, Evidence-Based Question (EBQ)	Three summarized, peer-reviewed studies on a shared topic	Three (A, B and C)	Up to 7	About 45 minutes, including 15 minutes of reading

The EBQ gets nearly twice the time because you have to read three sources, choose a position and build two separate arguments.

If you have not yet tried the digital format, our guide to what changes when AP exams go digital covers Bluebook practice previews and what test day looks like on screen.

The AP Psychology FRQ format rewards precise research skills more than long essays, and targeted practice can sharpen exactly those skills. The Article Analysis Question (AAQ), Part by Part

The AAQ gives you a summary of one study, usually with sections describing the participants, method and results. You then answer six short parts. Each part is narrow, and the scoring guidelines are strict about what counts. Here is what each part asks and how students lose the point, based on College Board's 2025 scoring guidelines and Chief Reader Reports.

Part A: Research method (1 point)

Name the method the researchers actually used, such as an experiment. In 2025, students most often lost this point by naming a different method, and listing extra methods "just in case" risks contradicting your answer. Naming the method is what earns the point; you can support it with a design feature, such as "participants were randomly assigned to groups, so this was an experiment."

Part B: Research variable (1 point)

Give an operational definition of a variable as this study measured it. "Anxiety" is a topic; "participants' self-rated anxiety on a 1 to 10 scale" is an operational definition. If the study used a scale or a count, say so.

Part C: Statistic interpretation (1 point)

Explain what a given statistic, such as a difference between group means or a significance result, shows about this study. Restating the numbers or defining "mean" earns nothing. Connect the number to the finding: which group scored higher, and what that suggests. If a result is not statistically significant, say the difference may be due to chance and does not support a real difference between the groups.

Part D: Ethical guideline (1 point)

Identify an ethical guideline the researchers actually applied, as stated in the summary, such as informed consent or debriefing. Guidelines they should have used, or study features that are not ethical guidelines, do not count. This was the best-scoring AAQ part in 2025, so treat it as a point you cannot afford to drop.

Part E: Generalizability (1 point)

Make a claim about whether the results generalize to a wider population, and support it with specific participant information from the study: age, location, background, how they were recruited. Sample size alone, or comments about reliability and validity, do not earn the point. If you argue the study is "partly" generalizable, you must give evidence for both sides.

Part F: Argumentation (2 points)

Explain how the results support or refute the psychological concept or hypothesis named in the prompt. One point goes to a response that cites results without explaining them, or explains without citing results. Both points require a specific result used to accurately explain the support or refutation. A reliable structure: state one result, say whether it supports or refutes the concept, then explain why.

The Evidence-Based Question (EBQ): Claim, Evidence, Reasoning

The EBQ is the harder of the two AP Psychology FRQ types because you are not just reading a study; you are building an argument from three of them. The prompt asks a question about a topic, and you answer it in three parts worth up to 7 points: Part A is the claim, and Parts B and C each pair an evidence point with a 2-point reasoning part.

Part A: Claim (1 point)

Write a clear claim that answers the question, such as a specific positive or negative effect, or a recommendation. Restating the question, or writing a vague or unrelated statement, does not count. Your claim can still earn this point even if the rest of the response does not support it, but a claim you can defend with two sources will make Parts B and C much easier.

Part B(i) and Part C(i): Evidence (1 point each)

Each evidence part asks for one specific, accurate, relevant result from a source, correctly cited. Part C must use a different source from Part B; in 2025, responses that reused the Part B source did not earn the point. Choose a finding, not a description of the method.

Two EBQ scoring rules shape how you write evidence. First, cite every piece of evidence: the scoring guidelines treat text before a citation as evidence and text after it as reasoning, so place your citation right after the finding. Second, get the direction right: readers check the general pattern of the data, so a small numerical slip is fine, but reversing which group scored higher is not.

Part B(ii) and Part C(ii): Explanation and application (2 points each)

For 1 point, explain how the evidence supports your claim. For the second point, apply a psychological concept, theory, perspective or research finding from the AP Psychology Course and Exam Description within that explanation. Part C(ii) must use a different concept from Part B(ii). Defining a concept is not applying it: you have to show how the concept explains why the evidence supports your claim.

College Board's 2025 Chief Reader Reports showed this pattern clearly. On the EBQ, the claim and first piece of evidence were the strongest parts, while the second reasoning part, which needs a new concept, had the lowest average relative to its points. The fix is planning. Before you write, read all three sources, note which findings support your claim, and list two distinct course concepts you could connect to them. Then reference both the evidence and the claim explicitly in each reasoning part.

Holding a claim, three sources and two different course concepts in your head under a 45-minute clock is a lot to manage, and the EBQ is where the gap between knowing psychology and scoring with it shows most clearly. An experienced AP Psychology tutor can practice EBQs with you, show you where your reasoning stops short of the second point, and build a planning routine that works under time pressure. How to Answer AP Psychology FRQs: Rules for Both Questions

These general scoring rules apply to both questions. The citation and data-direction rules covered above are EBQ-specific.

Apply, don't define. A definition can support an answer, but on its own it earns nothing. Every response has to connect the concept to the study or sources in front of you.
Stay on the topic of the sources. Points are awarded only when your response clearly addresses the source material.
Don't contradict yourself. Extra incorrect information usually does not cost you, but if you add something that directly contradicts a correct answer, such as two conflicting definitions, you lose that point.
Write clearly, not elaborately. Minor spelling and grammar errors are acceptable if the meaning is clear. Short, direct sentences beat a polished essay.

Turning this into a study plan

Start with the parts that cost students the most in 2025: naming the research method and interpreting a statistic on the AAQ, which scored lowest, and applying a second, distinct concept on the EBQ. Use the released questions and scoring guidelines on AP Central, plus the AAQs and EBQs your teacher assigns in AP Classroom. Score each part strictly against the guidelines. Our guide to getting real score gains from AP practice exams explains how to review mistakes so they do not repeat.

Content still matters. The EBQ application points must come from concepts in the course, and the exam covers five units: Biological Bases of Behavior, Cognition, Development and Learning, Social Psychology and Personality, and Mental and Physical Health. A concept you can only define in isolation is hard to apply under time pressure, so practice explaining each one with a real finding, on your own or with an AP Psychology tutor. If you are short on time before May, our 6-week AP rescue plan shows how to prioritize.
