Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580) is assessed through four written papers, and every candidate sits exactly two of them: Core candidates take Papers 1 and 3, while Extended candidates take Papers 2 and 4. At each tier, one paper is non-calculator and one requires a scientific calculator, and the two papers carry equal weight. Understanding the Cambridge IGCSE Maths 0580 papers in detail, from timings to the grades each tier can reach, is the first step towards a revision plan that actually fits the exam. (This guide has been updated for the 2026-27 academic year.)

Key Takeaways

Core candidates sit Paper 1 (non-calculator) and Paper 3 (calculator), each 1 hour 30 minutes and 80 marks, and are eligible for grades C to G.
Extended candidates sit Paper 2 (non-calculator) and Paper 4 (calculator), each 2 hours and 100 marks, and are eligible for grades A* to E.
At your tier, each of your two papers is worth 50% of your final mark, so non-calculator arithmetic and algebra matter just as much as calculator work.
A formula list is printed on page 2 of every paper, but not every formula is given, so you still need to learn the ones the syllabus expects you to know.
Show your working: when a question asks for working, Cambridge states that you cannot gain full marks without clearly communicating your method, even if your final answer is correct.

The Cambridge IGCSE Maths 0580 Papers at a Glance

The current 0580 syllabus is used for exams in 2025, 2026 and 2027, so it covers every student sitting the exam during the 2026-27 academic year. Exams run in the June and November series, with a March series available in India only. All four papers are externally assessed, and you answer every question on the paper; there is no choice of questions and no coursework.

Paper	Tier	Calculator	Duration	Marks	Weighting (of final mark at that tier)
Paper 1	Core	Not allowed	1 hour 30 minutes	80	50%
Paper 2	Extended	Not allowed	2 hours	100	50%
Paper 3	Core	Scientific calculator required	1 hour 30 minutes	80	50%
Paper 4	Extended	Scientific calculator required	2 hours	100	50%

The pairing is simple once you see it: odd-numbered papers are Core, even-numbered papers are Extended, and Papers 1 and 2 are the non-calculator papers. Cambridge describes the two papers at each tier as equally balanced, with the same duration, total marks, weighting and style. This structure was introduced for first assessment in 2025, when a non-calculator paper was added at both tiers and a formula sheet was introduced for all papers.

Both tiers draw on the same nine topic areas: Number; Algebra and graphs; Coordinate geometry; Geometry; Mensuration; Trigonometry; Transformations and vectors; Probability; and Statistics. Extended content includes all of the Core content plus additional material, such as surds, exact trigonometric values, and domain and range, which were added for Extended only in the current syllabus.

Core vs Extended: Which Tier Fits You?

The tier decision shapes everything else, because it sets both the papers you sit and the grades you can reach. According to the syllabus, Core candidates (Papers 1 and 3) are eligible for grades C to G, while Extended candidates (Papers 2 and 4) are eligible for grades A* to E. Cambridge states that candidates who have studied the Extended content and are expected to achieve grade C or above should be entered for Papers 2 and 4, while candidates who have studied the Core content, or who are expected to achieve grade D or below, should be entered for Papers 1 and 3. Anyone aiming for grades A* to C should study the Extended subject content.

The two tiers also test different skills in different proportions. The syllabus splits marks between two assessment objectives:

AO1, knowledge and understanding of mathematical techniques: 60–70% at Core, 40–50% at Extended.
AO2, analysing, interpreting and communicating mathematically: 30–40% at Core, 50–60% at Extended.

In practice, Core papers lean more heavily on applying standard techniques, while Extended papers ask you to do more interpreting, reasoning and explaining. A student who is fluent with methods but struggles to unpick an unfamiliar, wordy problem may find the Extended papers harder than their topic knowledge alone would suggest. Talk to your teacher early about which tier you are being entered for, because the decision affects the content you need to revise.

How to Prepare for Each Paper

Because the calculator and non-calculator papers are weighted equally, you need two distinct sets of habits.

Non-calculator papers (Paper 1 and Paper 2)

Calculators are not allowed on Papers 1 and 2, and Cambridge notes that learners need to practise showing working without a calculator. That makes written arithmetic a scoring skill in its own right. Build a short daily routine around:

Fractions, decimals and percentages by hand, including converting between them quickly and accurately.
Long multiplication and division, and estimating answers so you can spot when a result is clearly wrong.
Algebraic manipulation: expanding, factorising, rearranging formulae and solving equations without numerical shortcuts.
Exact answers: leaving answers in terms of π where asked and, for Extended students, working fluently with surds and exact trigonometric values.

When you practise, write every step. The syllabus states that you must show all necessary working in the spaces provided and that, when a question asks you to show your working, you cannot gain full marks without clearly communicating your method, even if your final answer is correct. On a non-calculator paper, a tidy line of working also makes your method easy for the examiner to follow.

Calculator papers (Paper 3 and Paper 4)

Papers 3 and 4 require a scientific calculator, and Cambridge strongly recommends one with trigonometric functions. Algebraic or graphical calculators are not permitted, so practise with the exact model you will take into the exam. Get comfortable with the functions you will use most: powers and roots, standard form, the sine, cosine and tangent keys, and the memory function for multi-step problems.

Accuracy rules matter here. Unless a question says otherwise, Cambridge expects non-exact numerical answers correct to 3 significant figures, and angles in degrees correct to 1 decimal place. For π, use the value from your calculator or 3.142. Avoid rounding too early in a long calculation: keep full calculator values until the final line, then round once.

Using the formula list properly

A formula list appears on page 2 of every paper, with separate lists for Core and Extended. Cambridge says the sheet will be the same for each series, so you can study it in advance. The catch is that not every formula is given: the subject content notes indicate which formulae are supplied and which you must know. Go through the syllabus with your formula sheet beside you and make your own list of the formulae you have to memorise. Then practise choosing the right formula for a question, which Cambridge highlights as a skill learners need to develop.

Pacing and equipment

Core papers give you 90 minutes for 80 marks, and Extended papers give you 120 minutes for 100 marks, so at both tiers you have a little over a minute per mark. Use that as a rough pacing check when you do timed practice: if a 4-mark question has taken you ten minutes, move on and come back later. Bring a pair of compasses, a protractor and a ruler to every paper, as the syllabus lists these for both tiers. Tracing paper is permitted on all four papers, but you cannot bring your own; you can request it during the exam.

Juggling two paper styles, a formula list, accuracy rules and a full topic list is a lot to manage on your own. It is easy to understand the content and still lose marks on method, rounding or timing, and that is exactly where focused support helps. Building a Past Paper Routine for 0580

Past papers are the most direct way to rehearse the real format, but they work best in stages rather than as endless full mocks.

Start topic by topic. Pull questions on a single topic, such as trigonometry or probability, from several papers and work through them with the mark scheme open. This shows you how marks are split between method and answer.
Move to untimed full papers. Following a step-by-step past paper method, complete a whole paper without the clock, then mark it strictly against the mark scheme and log every lost mark by topic and by type: content gap, careless slip, rounding error or missing working.
Finish with timed pairs. In the final weeks, sit the non-calculator and calculator papers for your tier back to back under exam conditions, as close as possible to the real timings.

Because the paper structure changed for first assessment in 2025, older papers from before then will not match the current format exactly. They are still useful for topic practice, but use papers and specimen materials written for the current syllabus for full timed runs, so you get used to the non-calculator paper and the printed formula list.

Keep your error log short and specific. "Lost 3 marks on Paper 2 for not simplifying a surd" is something you can fix this week; "need to revise algebra" is not. If you want one-to-one support with this kind of targeted practice, an experienced IGCSE Mathematics tutor can mark your papers against the mark scheme and show you where method marks are slipping away.

Looking Beyond the IGCSE Maths 0580 Papers

Strong habits from 0580, such as clear working, careful rounding and confident non-calculator algebra, carry directly into the next stage. If you are planning to continue with mathematics after IGCSE, it helps to see what is ahead: our guide to what to expect in A-Level Maths Paper 1 gives a clear picture of the next step and why fluent algebra matters before you start. Extended students in particular benefit from treating surds, exact values and function notation as foundations rather than one-off exam topics.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many papers are there in IGCSE Maths 0580?

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 has four papers, but each candidate sits only two. Core candidates take Paper 1 (non-calculator) and Paper 3 (calculator), each 1 hour 30 minutes and 80 marks. Extended candidates take Paper 2 (non-calculator) and Paper 4 (calculator), each 2 hours and 100 marks, and at both tiers each of the two papers is worth 50% of the final mark.

Can you get an A* in IGCSE Maths Core?

No. Core candidates, who sit Papers 1 and 3, are eligible for grades C to G only. Extended candidates, who sit Papers 2 and 4, are eligible for grades A* to E, and Cambridge advises that students aiming for grades A* to C should study the Extended content.

Is a formula sheet given in the IGCSE Maths 0580 exam?

Yes. A formula list is printed on page 2 of every 0580 paper, with separate lists for Core and Extended, and Cambridge says it will be the same for each series. Not every formula is included, so students still need to learn the formulae the syllabus says they must know.

What comes after IGCSE Maths?

Common next steps include A-Level Mathematics or another pre-university course, where IGCSE algebra, graphs and trigonometry become the foundation for more advanced work. The Extended tier covers more of the algebra and functions that later courses build on. For an overview of how the two qualifications differ, see our comparison of A-Level vs IGCSE.
