My methodology and approach to tutoring
What is your teaching philosophy?
Mathematics is more than just numbers and formulas; it's a way of thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving. With over 30 years of experience teaching international curricula, I've witnessed firsthand how a solid mathematical foundation empowers students in all areas of life. My teaching philosophy is grounded in conceptual understanding, critical thinking, and adaptability. I believe every student can succeed in mathematics with the right support. Instead of rote memorization, I emphasize the "why" behind concepts, encouraging students to explore different approaches and develop versatile problem-solving skills. As an IB Examiner and Team Leader, I understand examiners' expectations and help students refine their mathematical reasoning, communication, and exam techniques. Whether teaching in person or online, I create a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, learning from mistakes, and growing. My goal extends beyond high grades; I aim to instill a lifelong appreciation for mathematics, fostering curiosity, logical thinking, and the confidence to tackle any challenge.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In a first session, my priority is understanding the student's individual needs, learning style, and current mathematical understanding. I begin with introductions to build rapport and create a comfortable atmosphere. I then discuss their math experiences—what they find easy or challenging, their confidence level, and their goals (e.g., improving grades, exam preparation, or strengthening specific skills). Next, I conduct a diagnostic assessment, using targeted questions or a short problem-solving activity tailored to the curriculum and student's level. This helps pinpoint strengths, knowledge gaps, and misconceptions. Based on this assessment, I develop a personalized learning plan outlining our approach for future sessions. I also demonstrate a sample problem-solving strategy, showcasing how we'll focus on conceptual clarity, problem-solving techniques, and exam-style questions. Finally, I ensure the session ends positively, encouraging feedback and setting clear expectations for the next lesson. My goal is to create a structured yet flexible approach that keeps the student engaged, motivated, and confident in their learning journey.
