About Burcu

I am an experienced international educator, IB Examiner, curriculum designer, and academic mentor with over 20 years of expertise across IB, Cambridge, AP, A-Level, and national curricula. My professional background spans teaching, school leadership, curriculum alignment, and highly personalized academic support for students from diverse educational systems and cultural contexts. I hold a Master’s degree in Gifted and Talented Education and a Bachelor’s degree in Biology Education. I have worked extensively with IB students at both SL and HL levels, particularly in Biology and interdisciplinary sciences. As an IB Examiner, I bring in-depth insight into assessment criteria, mark schemes, and common examiner expectations and pitfalls, enabling students to approach exams and Internal Assessments with clarity, precision, and confidence. My tutoring approach is strategic and results-driven, focusing on: Deep conceptual understanding aligned with IB subject guides IB-style exam techniques, command terms, and mark-band optimization Internal Assessment (IA) support, including research question development, data analysis, evaluation, and academic writing Differentiated instruction for gifted learners, multilingual students, and those requiring structured academic guidance In addition to teaching, I have held senior leadership roles including Head of Science Department, Assistant Principal, and Principal. These roles have strengthened my holistic understanding of student development — academically, emotionally, and strategically — and allow me to support learners not only for exams, but for long-term academic success. I am also the founder of an international education consultancy, where I design curriculum-aligned learning programs, mentor teachers, and guide students through academic and career pathways aligned with global university expectations. I have supported students across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the UK through online and hybrid learning environments, and I am highly experienced in working with international students for whom English is an additional language. My teaching philosophy is grounded in inquiry-based learning, academic integrity, and a growth mindset. I believe that IB success comes from understanding how examiners think, mastering assessment criteria, and building intellectual confidence — not rote memorization. I am particularly passionate about working with motivated IB students who aim for top results, strong scientific thinking skills, and admission to leading universities worldwide.

Teaching Style

My methodology and approach to tutoring

How would you describe your teaching approach?

My teaching approach is structured, inquiry-based, and highly strategic. As an IB Examiner, I focus on helping students understand how learning is assessed, not just what content needs to be studied. Lessons are tailored to each student’s learning style, academic goals, and exam timeline, ensuring both conceptual depth and exam readiness

How do you help students achieve top IB results?

I combine deep subject knowledge with examiner insight. Students learn how to interpret command terms, meet mark-band descriptors, and avoid common assessment pitfalls. I emphasize exam technique, structured responses, and clear scientific reasoning — the key elements examiners look for at the highest levels.

How do you support students with Internal Assessments (IAs)?

I guide students through the entire IA process, from developing a focused research question to data analysis, evaluation, and academic writing. My support is ethical and aligned with IB regulations, helping students understand what examiners reward while maintaining academic integrity.

How do you support neurodiverse students?

I approach neurodiversity as a strength, not a limitation. My teaching is flexible and student-centred, allowing for differences in attention, processing speed, working memory, and learning preferences. I provide clear structure, predictable lesson flow, and explicit success criteria, while adapting strategies such as chunking content, visual scaffolding, and guided practice when needed. With my background in Gifted and Talented Education and school leadership, I have extensive experience supporting neurodiverse learners, including students with ADHD, dyslexia, and anxiety-related learning challenges. I focus on building confidence, reducing cognitive overload, and helping students develop personalised strategies that align with IB assessment expectations. Most importantly, I ensure that neurodiverse students understand how they are being assessed and why certain approaches are effective, empowering them to advocate for themselves and perform at their best within the IB framework.
