About Darina

Hi! My name is Darina, and I am a third-year student at the University of Edinburgh, expecting to graduate in 2024 with a BSc in Biomedical Sciences with Hons. Degree. I am particularly interested in pharmacology and reproductive biology! I graduated with an IB diploma in 2020 with 42/45 points in Biology (7), Chemistry (6), English Language & Literature (7), and Mathematics (6) at Higher Level. I am enthusiastic about Biology and Chemistry (as evidenced by my degree choice). I would love to share this passion with my students and help them achieve the best possible results. I am happy to assist you with your course material and work, exam preparation, and creating your internal assessment (IA). The IB can be very intimidating, as can be struggling and asking your teachers for help. That is why I wish that during my IB days, I had a tutor my age, who would be compassionate to my problems, having gone through the same thing already, and who could break down complex topics into components in tried-and-tested methods, which is precisely my goal as a tutor!

Teaching Style

My methodology and approach to tutoring

What is your teaching philosophy?

My philosophy in tutoring is that teaching should be accustomed to the student's preferred learning styles and specific needs, a lack of which is the main problem in schools. I believe in establishing a solid base first and building on top of that with more knowledge, making sure you are clear and confident in every topic with quizzing in a friendly setting. Additionally, lessons should be interactive and two-way communication rather than a monologue from the tutor.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

One of the most critical factors for a good tutoring experience is establishing a connection between the two parties involved. Therefore, the first session would involve us getting to know one another a bit to ensure the student is comfortable with the tutor. It is also vital to establish the student’s goals, what they specifically want help with, their strengths and weaknesses in studying and topic-specific knowledge, and most importantly, how they like to learn. Then we would collaboratively craft a teaching plan that the student is confident in and get started on learning according to it!
