Darren M.IB Mathematics & Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches Tutor
The biggest lessons you learn in life are from the mistakes you make, so don't be afraid to make a mistake in the classroom!
About Darren
Over the years, I have become a very patient and empathic teacher who always has my student's best interests in mind. Professionally, I believe in teaching to understand rather than memorize. It is tough to experience success on an examination if students cannot grasp why they are completing specific steps of a mathematical solution. I generally have at least two drastically different techniques for introducing a mathematical concept. I can play my favorite sports, football, hockey, and golf, when I'm not teaching IB Mathematics. More recently, I have become a world traveler and adore Italy.

Teaching Style
My methodology and approach to tutoring
What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy involves teaching for learning and understanding rather than using formulae and memorizing. My goal is to have students make sense of the concepts being taught. They will experience far more success in the long term and hence on the final exam if they genuinely comprehend rather than memorize an algorithm of steps to perform a given problem.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I typically run my diagnostic test with the student to understand their strengths and weaknesses. Once we select a topic, I would ask the student some simple questions about that concept. I would be able to gather evidence on things such as - how much the student understands, whether you are making conceptual or arithmetic errors, and whether or not the student has memorized the steps rather than grasped the key learnings. From there, I can alter my lesson to accommodate the student's best interests.

My son really appreciated Darren's teaching style and his ability to comprehend the concepts in his course improved greatly. My own regret is that we didn't hire Darren earlier!

Darren was a fantastic tutor. My son needed help preparing for the IB Analysis and Approaches exam and Darren more than sufficiently prepared him. My son thoroughly enjoyed Darren's classes and learned what he needed to for the gaps he had from his school. I strongly recommend him as a tutor. Thank you, Darren!
