About Guillermo

A data-driven engineer with three years of program management experience in fast-moving, startup environments. In my role as a Product Manager at a self-driving car company, I work to address the operational, technical, policy, and customer needs to scale safe, accessible, and autonomous mobility services to users, one deployment at a time. I am entrepreneurial and self-motivated and am most engaged when I can take in the technical details of what I’m doing, work directly with customers, and have a great sense of the broader context around what I’m doing (social, policy, etc.). I love helping others and am happy to talk about: – applying to and choosing a college – choosing a major and a career – navigating personal finances and building credit I grew up in South Texas and attended a prestigious International Baccalaureate-only high school, where I studied both Chemistry and Physics HL! My favorite subjects were History and Chemistry. After high school, I moved away to California to attend Stanford University, where I studied Mechanical Engineering. Ask me about the solar electric car I built with a team of 40 students and then raced across the continent of Australia, or the fascinating famous people I got to meet and talk to!

Teaching Style

My methodology and approach to tutoring

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe in using any language or approach necessary for the student, teaching with patience, and revisiting concepts until students build their own excitement and understanding.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In my first session with a new student, I would spend a bit of time getting to know him or her and talking about my own background to start building a longer-term rapport. I would then try to understand the student’s current understanding of their subject and learn more about their needs and learning style. By the end of the session, we would have a plan for what to do next and have also covered a first teaching session.

I'm giving feedback based on my daughter's first and only tutoring session with Guillermo. She thought he was disorganized (his cat was on his lap and distracting him, he had to leave his desk and look for his laptop charger) and wasn't always able to answer her questions. Instead, he would go on little tangents about subjects she said she understood and didn't want help with. Again, this was their first session but since she's had a number of other tutors on this platform I trust her feedback. She didn't think they were a good match personality-wise either.
