Teaching Style
My methodology and approach to tutoring
What is your teaching philosophy?
With the experience of working at both the Secondary and Senior Secondary school levels and in activities outside the traditional classroom, I have a diverse background with much to offer. As a teacher, I strive to engage, challenge and inspire growth in my students. I use different strategies to engage my students inside the classroom, such as sometimes I begin my class by showing a live demonstration or a short video related to the topic that I planned to teach, which draws them into brainstorming sessions, encouraging them to ask questions and share opinions thus enriching their learning experience. By doing that, I made my classes student-centered rather than me talking all time. Sometimes when I become “stuck,” I seek the input of my colleagues, my books, and the endless array of resources that can be found on the internet. When I return to the classroom, I share the answer I explored and the process of discovering it. Above all else, I challenge my students to understand that I am open to their thoughts, eager to hear their opinions, and thrilled to learn with and through them. I hope students leave my tuition classroom knowing what it means to be a collaborator. I also expect to be challenged by my students – an expectation I hope to communicate to the class early on. I am passionate about teaching children and forging relationships with them that help build confidence and enable them to grow as learners. As a teacher, my main goal is to motivate students to do their best and expand their limits by encouraging them to construct their learning in an environment that stimulates and helps them realize their full potential.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
During the first session, I will introduce myself and ask them some questions about themselves. The goal is to establish a friendly rapport to help the Student feel at ease. I might ask the Student about their interest and feelings about learning concepts online. Extend the conversation by asking about their specific needs or expectations from me as their online tutor. Also, discuss the topics student struggled with during chemistry lessons in school. For personalized lessons, it's essential to know how to move forward, as it's also vital to give importance to their voice. If the Student feels respected, things will be easy for my Student and me. I will also ask the Student to be confident in asking questions.
