Extended Essay

The Extended Essay is one of the three core requirements of the IB Diploma Programme, alongside Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). Students choose a research question within one of the available DP subjects and produce a formal academic paper of up to 4,000 words. The process is supervised by a school-appointed advisor, and students are expected to spend approximately 40 hours on research, writing, and reflection.

The EE is assessed on a scale of A to E using published criteria that evaluate the research question, methodology, analysis, argument, and formal presentation. The grade contributes up to 3 bonus points toward the overall IB Diploma score when combined with the TOK grade via the IB's core points matrix. A grade of E in either the EE or TOK results in automatic failure of the diploma.

Subject choices for the EE span all six DP subject groups as well as interdisciplinary options such as World Studies. Popular subjects include History, English Literature, Biology, and Economics. The essay must demonstrate critical thinking, subject-specific knowledge, and proper academic referencing. Students who start early and maintain a consistent research schedule tend to produce stronger essays.

The Extended Essay develops university-level research and writing skills that serve students well in higher education. Admissions officers at competitive universities often view a strong EE as evidence of intellectual curiosity and the ability to manage a sustained independent project.
