Theory of Knowledge

Theory of Knowledge is a required interdisciplinary course in the IB Diploma Programme that asks students to reflect on knowledge itself. Rather than learning new subject content, TOK challenges students to consider the methods, assumptions, and limitations that underpin knowledge in areas such as the natural sciences, human sciences, mathematics, history, the arts, ethics, and religious and indigenous knowledge systems.

The course is built around a central question: "How do we know?" Students explore this through twelve key concepts including evidence, certainty, truth, interpretation, culture, and responsibility. TOK is typically taught over the two years of the DP, with approximately 100 hours of instructional time.

Assessment consists of two components. The TOK Exhibition is an internally assessed task where students select three objects and link them to one of 35 prescribed prompt questions, demonstrating how TOK manifests in the real world. The TOK Essay is an externally assessed 1,600-word essay responding to one of six prescribed titles released by the IB for each examination session. Both components require students to draw on specific real-life examples and make connections across different areas of knowledge.

The TOK grade (A through E) combines with the Extended Essay grade to contribute up to 3 bonus points to the overall diploma score. Beyond its contribution to the diploma, TOK cultivates habits of critical thinking that are increasingly valued in university education and professional life. Students learn to evaluate claims, identify bias, and appreciate the complexity of knowledge production.
