IB Learner Profile

The IB Learner Profile sits at the heart of the International Baccalaureate's educational philosophy and applies across all four IB programmes: PYP, MYP, DP, and CP. The ten attributes describe the ideal IB student as: Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open-minded, Caring, Risk-takers, Balanced, and Reflective.

Each attribute is defined with intentional breadth. "Inquirers" describes students who develop curiosity, research skills, and a love of learning. "Risk-takers" refers to students who approach uncertainty with forethought and determination, willing to explore new ideas and strategies. "Balanced" encompasses attention to intellectual, physical, and emotional well-being.

The Learner Profile is not assessed with a formal grade but is woven into the fabric of IB education. Teachers incorporate the attributes into lesson planning, student reflection, and feedback. In the Diploma Programme, the Learner Profile connects to TOK (through critical thinking and open-mindedness), CAS (through caring, risk-taking, and balance), and the Extended Essay (through inquiry and reflection). Schools often use the profile as a common language for discussing student development and as a framework for school culture.
