CAS
IB Diploma Programme

Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) is a core component of the IB Diploma Programme requiring students to engage in a range of experiences alongside their academic studies. CAS encourages personal growth through creative endeavors, physical activity, and community service over the course of the two-year programme.

In-Depth Guide

CAS is one of the three core elements of the IB Diploma Programme, together with Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay. It is not assessed with a grade but must be completed satisfactorily for a student to receive the IB Diploma. Students are expected to maintain a balanced engagement across the three CAS strands throughout the programme.

The three strands are defined broadly. Creativity encompasses arts and other experiences involving creative thinking, such as learning an instrument, writing, designing, or participating in drama. Activity includes physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle, from team sports to individual fitness to outdoor expeditions. Service involves collaborative and reciprocal engagement with the community in response to an authentic need, such as tutoring younger students, volunteering at a shelter, or organizing a community project.

Students must complete a CAS project that is collaborative in nature, extends over at least one month, and involves all three strands. They document their experiences through reflections in a CAS portfolio, which is reviewed by a school-appointed CAS coordinator. The IB expects students to demonstrate growth in seven learning outcomes, including identifying strengths and areas for development, undertaking new challenges, showing perseverance, and engaging with issues of global significance.

While CAS does not receive a numerical score, failure to complete CAS requirements results in non-award of the diploma. The programme encourages students to step outside their comfort zones and develop as well-rounded individuals. Many students find that CAS experiences become highlights of their IB journey and provide compelling material for university applications.
